Led a comprehensive localization effort to expand the Refugee Information Portal from 4 to 10 languages, ensuring critical legal information reached asylum-seekers in their native languages during a period of increasing global displacement.
Context
When I joined Refugee Solidarity Network in 2019, the Refugee Information Portal was already providing critical information to asylum-seekers in Türkiye in four languages: Arabic, Turkish, Farsi, and English. But as global displacement increased and the diversity of asylum-seekers grew, a critical information gap emerged. The onset of COVID-19 further highlighted the urgent need for timely, accessible information in additional languages.
What I Did
- 1
Needs Analysis
Conducted user interviews and analyzed web analytics to prioritize which languages would have the greatest impact.
- 2
Translation Workflows
Managed content structuring and translation workflows with external agencies, establishing QA criteria to ensure accuracy of legal information.
- 3
Video Localization
Sourced multilingual voiceover talent and coordinated localization of 140+ animated explainer videos.
- 4
Implementation
Oversaw UI string localization and technical implementation across the WordPress platform.
Impact
The expanded language support enabled thousands of marginalized asylum-seekers to access critical legal information in their native languages. Just as importantly, it created infrastructure for rapid response. When COVID-19 hit and later when earthquakes struck Southeast Turkey, we could quickly publish life-saving information across all ten languages.
