An interactive data storytelling experience that transforms complex family reunification data for unaccompanied minors in Turkey into accessible, engaging visualizations.
The Challenge
I had written a report for RSN on family reunification for unaccompanied minors, but reports can only reach so many people. The data told important stories about the challenges these children face, and I wanted to make that information accessible to a broader audience through interactive visualization.
What I Built
- 1
Interactive Visualizations
Built charts and maps using Nivo and react-simple-maps to communicate key findings from the report.
- 2
Application Stepper
Created an XState-powered component guiding users through the non-linear stages of the family reunification application process.
- 3
Responsive Design
Ensured all visualizations work across devices, making the data accessible on mobile and desktop.
Impact
The project demonstrates how data visualization can make policy-relevant information accessible to advocates, journalists, and the public—turning a static report into an explorable experience.
